DoxyPEP
DoxyPEP involves taking an antibiotic called doxycycline to help reduce the chance of getting some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) after sex.
What is DoxyPEP?
DoxyPEP involves taking an antibiotic called doxycycline to help reduce the chance of getting some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) after sex.
It is taken as soon as possible after condomless sex. Research shows it can lower the risk of syphilis and chlamydia. DoxyPEP does not protect against HIV or other viruses, and it does not replace regular STI testing as advised by our clinic team.
Who is DoxyPEP for?
DoxyPEP is not needed by everyone. It is offered to people at higher risk of certain bacterial STIs.
You may be eligible if you:
- Have had a recent bacterial STI (such as syphilis, chlamydia or gonorrhoea)
- Are having condomless sex where there is ongoing risk
- Are using HIV PrEP
How do I get DoxyPEP from the clinic?
- Use our online booking system: Welcome to Online Booking for Sexual Health
- Enter your details and select STI Prevention – DoxyPEP New as the appointment type
- Due to expected high demand, you may need to wait a few weeks for an appointment
This will be a telephone appointment, where we will check if DoxyPEP is suitable for you and explain how and when to take it. You won’t need to attend in person for this appointment, but you will need to collect the medication later if it is prescribed.

How much DoxyPEP can I get from Lothian Sexual Health?
We can currently provide one supply every six months, which equals 50 doxycycline tablets. If you feel this may not meet your needs, please discuss this with us. Some people choose to obtain additional supply from reputable online pharmacies.
I’m running out of my DoxyPEP prescription
If you have already had a DoxyPEP start appointment at Chalmers, you can request more by:
- Attending your routine HIV PrEP review (if you use PrEP)
- Visiting the GB+ drop-in clinic to collect more
- Calling the Health Advisor team on 0131 536 2108
Please note: we are currently only able to provide 50 tablets every six months through the NHS. If you think you need more than this, speak to us about your options.
