• What does ROAM stand for?

  Resource Outreach and Advice for Men

• What is ROAM Outreach?

  ROAM Outreach is a community-based sexual health service supporting gay, bisexual, trans, and all men who have sex with men (GBMSM). We provide sexual health testing, vaccinations, prevention tools and information, support, and advice in welcoming and inclusive spaces within the community.

• Who can use ROAM services?

  Our services are open to gay, bisexual, trans, and all men who have sex with men. We are committed to creating safe, inclusive environments where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

• Where does ROAM operate?

  ROAM delivers outreach services within community spaces, NHS building, outreach testing bus, LGBT inclusive venues and at events across Edinburgh and the Lothians. Visit our Get Tested part on the website or follow us on social media to find upcoming testing times and locations.

• Do I need an appointment?

  Most ROAM outreach sessions are drop-in, meaning you can attend without an appointment. If booking is required, this will be clearly advertised on the testing locations page such as Pennywell and Craigmillar. The testing page is updated weekly

• Does ROAM have weekend clinics?

  No, ROAM only operates Monday through Friday. We also observe public holidays. Please see our “Get Tested’ for our latest schedule or check out our Instagram for updates.

Prevention

• How can I reduce my risk of HIV and other STIs?

  Regular testing, getting vaccinated if possible, using condoms and lube, taking PrEP where appropriate, and having open conversations with partners can all help reduce the risk of HIV and other STIs. Our team can provide personalised advice and support.

• What is PrEP?

  PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is medication that significantly reduces the risk of acquiring HIV when taken correctly. It is a highly effective HIV prevention tool.

• Can ROAM help me access PrEP?

  Yes. We can provide information about PrEP, discuss whether it may be suitable for you, complete a PrEP assessment and refer you to the Chalmers PrEP Team and they will arrange your medication.

• I’m taking PrEP. Do I still need to get tested?

  Yes. While PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV, it does not protect against other STIs. Regular sexual health testing remains important.

• I had my PrEP Review through Chalmers. Can I collect my PrEP from a ROAM Clinic?

  If your review appointment is by phone call, you can ask the nurse or doctor who prescribes your PrEP about collecting from a ROAM clinic. The clinician will need to prepare the medication and contact ROAM to request us to bring it along to your preferred clinic. If you don’t collect your PrEP from the ROAM clinic on the agreed date, it will be returned to Chalmers for you to collect from reception. We don’t offer refills of PrEP via ROAM clinics that haven’t been pre-arranged at your telephone review appointment.

• What is PEP?

  PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is emergency medication that may prevent HIV infection after potential exposure. It must be started as soon as possible and within 72 hours of the last condomless anal sex. Please contact Chalmers Centre Monday to Friday or attend A&E out of hours. • What vaccinations are available?

  There are several types of vaccinations available to GBMSM, these include Hepatitis A, B, HPV, Gonorrhoea and MPox Check out the vaccinations section on our website for more information.

• DoxyPEP

  DoxyPEP involves taking an antibiotic called Doxycycline to help reduce the chance of getting some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) after sex. It is taken as soon as possible after condomless sex. Research shows it can lower the risk of syphilis and chlamydia. DoxyPEP does not protect against HIV or other viruses, and it does not replace regular STI testing as advised by our clinic team. • Condoms

  Condoms help protect you and your partner from sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and pregnancy. There are many different types of condoms to suit different people. We will be happy to advise you on condoms and supply them for free. You can also order them for free online at C:Card

• Lube

  Using lubricant is an important part of safer, more comfortable anal sex. Lube helps reduce friction, lowers the risk of small tears, and can help prevent condoms from breaking during sex. Water-based and silicone-based lubricants are both suitable options, especially when used alongside condoms. You can access free lube from the ROAM testing sessions, Chalmers Centre or can sign up to C:Card for free

Privacy & Support

• Is the service confidential?

  Yes. Your privacy is extremely important to us. Any information you share with ROAM is handled confidentially and in accordance with relevant data protection and healthcare standards.

• Will anyone know I’ve been tested?

  No. Attending a ROAM service is confidential. We will not share your information without your consent unless there is a legal or safeguarding requirement to do so.

• I’m not out. Can I still use the service?

  Absolutely. You do not need to be open about your sexuality or gender identity to access our services. We welcome everyone without judgement.

• I’m nervous about getting tested. What should I do?

  Many people feel anxious before a test. Our team is friendly, experienced, and understanding. We’ll explain the process, answer your questions, and support you throughout your visit.

• What happens if I receive a positive result?

  If a result requires follow-up, we will support you every step of the way. We’ll explain your options, answer any questions, and connect you with the appropriate healthcare services and support.

• Can I bring a friend or partner with me?

  Yes. If having someone with you helps you feel more comfortable, you’re welcome to bring a friend, partner, or support person where appropriate.

Testing

• What can I get tested for?

  You can get full sexual health testing – this includes testing for HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea and Hepatitis. The team will explain how to complete the tests.

• I don’t have any symptoms. Should I still get tested?

  Yes. Many STIs can show no symptoms. Regular testing is the best way to look after your sexual health and protect both yourself and your partners.

• How do I do the tests?

  Most tests are quick and straightforward. Depending on the test, you may be asked to provide a blood sample, a self taking urine sample, a throat and/or rectal swab. Tests are determined on the sex you are having. Our team will explain everything beforehand and answer any questions you may have.

• A sexual partner of mine just tested positive, how soon can I test?

  From your last sexual contact with them, you should test at:

  • 2 weeks for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea
  • 6 weeks for HIV
  • 12 weeks for Syphilis

  Testing sooner than those timeframes when you have no symptoms can give you false results and is not recommended. If you are exhibiting symptoms such as discharge, rash, ulcers, or blisters, please contact Chalmers to arrange for sooner testing, possible examination and treatment.

• How often should I get tested?

  Testing frequency depends on your sexual activity. If you have new or multiple partners, the testing every 3 months would is recommended. Our team can help you decide what is right for you.

• How long will it take to get my results?

  The timeframe for most tests are 7-10 days. Some rapid tests can provide results on the same day, while others may take longer. We will explain when and how you can expect to receive your results. You are required to call the results line on 0131 536 1050 then enter your AN number and DOB.

• I’ve recently had sex. Is it too soon to get tested?

  Different infections have different window periods before they can be detected. If you’re unsure, speak to a member of our team and we’ll advise you on the best time to test.

• I just tested positive for a STI. Can I receive treatment at a ROAM clinic?

  No, we do not routinely offer treatment for STIs through ROAM clinics. If you have been invited in for treatment following a positive result, this must be done through Chalmers.
